Driving back from Springfield, Ill., I got a call from the Springfield News-Leader, in Springfield, Mo., looking for a shooter for the State Soccer Championship being held in Blue Springs. I was assigned to shoot Springfield Catholic High School in their semi-final match against Fatima on Friday and if they continued their undefeated season, (they did) in the Class 1 Championship on Saturday. While at the Examiner I shot a sporting event almost everyday and I’ve missed it. An added bonus to getting a paycheck is that Catholic won. I’ve lost count of how many trips to state I made (somewhere in the low teens) during my 2 1/2 years in Independence, almost all of them ending with the kids I was there to cover being in tears at the conclusion of the championship game, the sole exception being wrestling where Blue Springs had the state title wrapped up the day BEFORE I arrived. I was starting to wonder if there might be some truth to my self-depreciating jokes about being a jinx. Catholic forward Michtell Moncada ended that with a header with a little over 12 minutes left in the game. The weather was warm, the light was nice and despite some serious wind it was a nice way to spend a Friday and Saturday afternoon.
